Two Months In

A little more than two months into our new family...like any good second child, we are terrible at keeping up with pictures and development. It doesn't help that we moved and are juggling selling one house and getting another one set up and maintaining two careers.

Ruby continues to blossom. She is cruising and will take a few steps unassisted AND unrequested....don't ask her to walk to you...she only wants to walk when she wants to do it. She is mimicking words and actions. She has similar sensory issues like her big sister had so we are working on that as well as her feeding challenges. She is happy and healthy. She loves to give kisses to everyone and especially loves her sister and doggies. Daddy is the apple of her eye.

She has started transitioning to a toddler program. Even after a couple of hours, we have seen a little positive change in her. We are confident that spending time with some children her own age she is going to catch up developmentally and have some fun along the way.

Bella is in the final lap of her preschool days. We cannot believe that our baby is going to start Kindergarten next fall. She is so smart and is a very curious learner. She has a great summer ahead of her with some fun camps. Now that we no longer are part of a community with a pool we are thinking of joining a pool somewhere so the girls can swim this summer.

Happy 18 Months!

Unfortunately, we could not be together as a family for Ruby's 1st birthday so we had a little birthday celebration for her 18 month birthday last week. Bella made the cake and frosted most of it...she spelled out Ruby in sprinkles!

One Month Later

(note - this isn't how we feed her...it was an experience in getting comfortable with texture and practicing using a spoon...food got everywhere, of course)

I teeter between saying "its been a month?" and "it's only been a month?". We have had one of the crazier months of our life. The first week of January we got the call we waited nearly four years to get. We were parents for a second time. In just eight days, we would leave for Taiwan as a family of three and come home a family of four. Nine days later we returned after an exhausting 27 hour flight. Bella did great...she slept through the two longest legs of the flights. Ruby, on the other hand, fought sleeping and in doing so wrestled her new mama for a good 20 hours of the trip.

We continued to have eating and drinking issues at home along with terrible jet lag for everyone. Three days later, we would be admitted to the children's hospital for dehydration. Our ped said he was convinced before we came in that he would not do that to a child so new to us and so new to coming home but the risk was too great when we had no history on what got her to this point or how long it had been going on. We have since, with the help of our ped, put together the likely situation with Ruby's feeding and drinking issues over the last six months or so.

The good news is that despite everything, she is at a good weight despite her weight loss and continued feeding limitations. It will come in time. She is otherwise healthy and currently growing teeth and hair like they are going out of style. She crawls and cruises everywhere but buckles when we try to get her to stand. I would guess it is going to be awhile yet before she feels confident in walking.

For fun, the last day in the hospital we closed on house and moved the next day. Despite everything, both girls were troopers and here we sit enjoying each new day.

On top of everything, Ruby has learned the following:

Sign language - more, eat and all done. (what else does a girl need other than shopping?)

She "says" a few consistent tones that seem to be doggie, Bella and bye bye

One word you can easily understand is DaDa...and girl knows how to use it....just today I got a couple of MaMas...first time since before our hospital trip

She is getting better at knowing her own name and looks when called

She makes kiss noises all day and has started leaning in for a smooch....she has started blowing kisses

She thinks it is hilarious when she sneezes and mimicks a sneeze sound when someone else sneezes

She loves to be applauded for her triumphs and loves to clap with you

She wants to be her big sister's shadow....who doesn't?

She is still very leery of strangers. It took her some time to come around to T so I am not surprised. Interestingly, she has been okay for a few minutes in the arms of our good friend Sharon and a few Asian friends....with anyone else, she goes and then lounges back to me. She adores Bella and her friends. Men, in general, are her least favorite creature...

She is starting to love bath...washing that head of hair is not her favorite time of the day

She is doing better in the car and figuring out how to deal with the sun from various sides of the car

She is funny and strong and so musical....we thought Bella was musical....that was nothing like this...Ruby makes everything into a reason to make a beat or dance

She loves the dogs...I think we could leave and she would be happy if they raised her....she loves them and doggie is the word you hear most each day

So far, food favs...keep in mind, eating issues....we have to focus on calories more than nutrition until we have some more trust with food established....so here it goes....yogurt, cheddar potato soup and zucchini bread...followed by cinnamon animal crackers

She is working on using a spoon and a sippy cup

I hope that someday when she is a teenager and my sheer existence is making her mad, that she remembers how I sat with her up to two hours a meal patiently trying all sorts of foods, textures, tastes, delivery methods and applauded every bite that was successful...anything to make sure she got enough calories and some nutrition...and the daily calculation of how many ounces of liquid she may have had.....most babies down a bottle....not our girl....she milks a bottle all day

Happy Birthday to our Goose

Hard to believe our baby is 5 years old already...she celebrated with a quaint slumber party! Daddy took the big girls to see The Muppets and then home for a requested spaghetti dinner and a butterfly cake (made by Bella and Mommy). The weekend wouldn't be complete without a morning run to the local donut shop!

Zia jian Taiwan. Xie xie

The family is asleep, and daddy is at the keyboard. We're to be up, dressed, packed, and downstairs in less than 6 hours...but I find myself unable to sleep at the moment. I cannot help but reflect on our time here, and felt compelled to write a few notes for posterity. While I cannot sleep, I am tired, so forgive me if any or all of this is incoherent...or just plain dumb. Thank you.

Have you ever been working on a jigsaw puzzle and you get down to the last piece or two...and you realize that a piece is missing? Yet, you know the piece is there somewhere...you're just certain of it. To me, our family was that jigsaw puzzle, and Ruby was that puzzle piece that was there somewhere, we just had to find it. This week we found the missing piece to our puzzle...and she fit perfectly.

What an amazing trip. Such a long drawn out process that seemed it would never end...followed by a sort of mad dash to pull together a trip that would take us half way around the world (by the way, thank you mommy for all you did throughout all phases of the process) to meet our Ruby.

I can't help but think about being at work when H called me to give me the news. We were in the middle of a class change when I felt my Blackberry begin to vibrate. I looked and saw it was a call from her, and knew it must have been pretty important and I assumed it was news about our house, yet I also knew I wouldn't be able to hear her in the midst of middle school chaos. So when I answered, I merely said "Let me call you right back, we're changing classes." Her reply was inaudible, but I could tell she was crying. I said, "What? What's wrong?" She gathered herself (but only a little), and said "She's ours! We got her!" You couldn't have smacked the grin off my face with a shovel and a rake.

Meeting Ruby, holding her, hearing her call H "mama", watching her play with Bella, seeing her smile...it all brings back that same grin. Our puzzle is complete, and now it is time to leave this amazing place. A piece of me will certainly remain, and a piece of beautiful country and its generous people will go with us as we travel home.

Time for sleep. My last sleep in Taiwan until we return to visit. My last sleep, my last van ride with Mr. Yeh and Alex, my last round the clock travel...all followed by my first night at home with both our daughters.

Smiles

We spent the day at the Taipei Zoo yesterday and had a great time. It was our first time seeing many of these animals including pandas, koalas and rhinos. It was raining today so we hung out in the room and got our stuff ready to go for our trip home tomorrow morning. We leave the hotel at 6am and hope to be safely home about 27 hours later.

Ruby is really coming out of her shell and her smile and voice are so beautiful. She interacted with Bella some today and Bella loves being the big sister. Bella has been a dream on the trip and Ruby is taking a lot in stride. When in doubt, a quick pick up from her Mommy and all is right in the world again. She still won't eat anything other than yogurt and water. We have some packed for the flight but hope that we can find some in Toyko as it isn't going to stay cold for long. We have tricked her with the last few meals by adding rice cereal to it to thicken it up.

I should get back to packing but wanted to share an update on our girls!

Reflections From Daddy

What an amazing journey. It's been so long, that I cannot say with any degree of certainty just when this journey began.

However, I can say that the pain and anxiety over the long road to get to this moment in time has quickly been replaced by absolute elation. Holding Ruby, seeing her smile, hearing her calling H "Mama", watching the interactions between her and Bella...those memories will last a lifetime.

Add to that the beauty of Taiwan...not just the scenery, but the people themselves. Everyone here is so welcoming. Everyone except the one woman in the Rosewood Lounge here at the hotel who gives us grief about "policy" when we ask if we can have a Coke and a Coke Light (a.k.a. Diet Coke) to take back to the room. Apparently the "policy" is that drinks are free as long as you enjoy them IN the lounge. Well pardon us for not wanting to schlep our two young daughters down to the lounge to watch mommy and daddy enjoy a soda. Perhaps if we did that just once during her shift, then she'd loosen up a little on her "policy" stance. I digress.

Our guides, Mr. Yeh and his son "Alex" just might be two of the three nicest men I've ever met (along with "Dennis"...our guide in China). These two men have bent over backwards to make sure that our experience here is a pleasant one. They've rearranged their schedules to accommodate us, encouraged us to try foods that we honestly would never dream of trying on our own, and even helped us haggle a better price on a few items at the local market. All with a smile on their face(s). I wish everyone could have seen the look of absolute joy on Mr. Yeh's face as we were coming to the end of our day today...not because his day with us was almost over, but rather because as he drove us back to our hotel, he heard Ruby in the backseat calling H "Mama". He turned his face toward us, all smiles, and said "Ahhh...mama!!! Baby say mama!"

Now for a few random ramblings in conclusion:

  • I am intrigued by the delicate dance that is the traffic of Taiwan. It's obvious to anyone that the painted lanes on the streets are merely suggestions of where one could drive if so inclined...but are largely ignored. We have routinely been 6 cars wide on 3 lane streets throughout our stay.

  • I don't think I could get you within 5 miles of a 7-Eleven store ANYWHERE at home without looking up locations online. However, I can walk you to multiple locations all within 5 minutes of our hotel.

  • H and I found it amusing that several local buses have large photos on the side which depict men wielding guns. While it is obviously an ad for a movie or television show, we joked that it was all part of the new mass transit ad campaign..."Ride or die"

  • Scooters are EVERYWHERE!

  • Sumo wrestling is one of those things that once I start watching it, I just cannot make myself change the channel.

Goodnight all. We'll be home soon.
